Our Summer Phase
A six-week academic enhancement program on the campus of Cranbrook Kingswood School. The summer program will include a day program for 9th graders and a residential program for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. Placement tests will be administered to the students in order to assess their skills and develop their schedules accordingly. Students will participate in such classes as English and Language Arts, mathematics through calculus, laboratory science, social studies, foreign languages, and study skills. In this way participants will be better prepared during the academic school year and will be challenged to excel in each class enrolled.
Theme
During the summer, a thematic approach to learning will be incorporated. A "theme" is determined and a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning will be designed. This method helps participants develop and improve their problem-solving skills.
Gender Specific Education
Freshman and sophomore English and math classes will be separated by gender in order to provide a safe learning environment for male and female participants during a critical point in their development. This will produce a more confident mature and academically ready program participant.
Mandatory Study Hall
A grade-level study hall with teachers from each core area is scheduled during the academic day. A second individualized study hall is scheduled during the evening. In this way participants will increase their academic skills and be better prepared to not only study independently, but develop essential study competencies.
College Counseling and the College Tour
The College Counseling department will prepare participants for post-secondary education experiences. They will encourage students to enroll in schools that have TRIO services, and other student support services. Participants will be better informed and prepared to make sound decisions relative to planning for post-secondary level experience. Rising juniors will be provided with an "up-close" view of several colleges and universities during a one week college tour (7th week of program). They will have an opportunity to interact with college representatives so that at least 80% to 90% will enroll in post-secondary level institutions.
Supervised Group Activities
Students can choose to participate in a plethora of after school activities. Participants will enhance their skill level and develop an appreciation for the arts and other cultural/career-focused activities. The following activities are offered: Art, CKHUB Newspaper, Piano, Guitar, Dance, Chess, Computer Applications, and Medical Scholars Club.
HUB Garden Project
Healthy diets are just as important in creating a well-rounded and able student. For this reason, students will be given the opportunity to grow fresh vegetables in the HUB Garden. In this way participants will see the connection between fresh garden vegetables and nutrition. Participants will play an active role in the garden, growing, maintaining, harvesting, cooking, and delivering produce. As part of community service, some of the vegetables grown by the students will be donated to local food banks and shelters.
Health and Physical Education and Recreation
In order to reduce the risk of acquiring childhood/adult health concerns, and to understand the importance of being physically fit, participants will participate in physical fitness activities. These activities include the martial art, Tai Chi, as well as intramural and organized sports. Participants will become aware of the benefits of being physically fit and acquire skills that will benefit them throughout life.
Wilderness Experience
Participants can elect to participate in a scheduled guided weekend wilderness experience along with the other members of their grade. Participants will learn about life-time survival techniques that are applicable to everyday life situations. This is also a great bonding experience for the students, as they are able to see their fellow classmates in a different light.
